False Door

1 min read

A false door is an artistic representation of a door which does not function like a real door.

They are a common architectural element in Angkor, where they can be seen carved into three faces of the many temple sanctuaries.  Typically only the eastern face of a sanctuary had a real door giving access to the cella, on the eastern face,  the most important of the cardinal points in the Hindu religion.
