A Kalpa is a cycle of time, at the end of which Shiva destroys the world; following this, a new kalpa is initiated by the recreation of the world when Brahma is reborn from the navel of Vishnu.
Each kalpa is a day and a night of Brahma, but 8,640 million human years, and contains 2,000 mahayugas, or 'great ages'.
