Kamsa, a demon and the son of a demon, the tyrant ruler of the Vrishni kingdom with its capital at Mathura. He was the brother of Devaki, the mother of the god Krishna, and thus Krishna's uncle.
As Kamsa had committed many sins, the gods asked Vishnu to reestablish order. Kamsa, forewarned that he would one day die at the hands of a certain Krishna, decided to kill all the children in the kingdom. The new-born Krishna was secretly taken away and put into the care of a foster family. The infant Krishna was thus raised by the cowherd Nanda and his wife Yashoda. These scenes are depicted at the Baphuon Temple.
Krishna eventually killed Kamsa in Mathura, the scene depicted in my work Krishna Slaying the Demon Kamsa, Banteay Srei, Angkor, Cambodia. 2019.
