Banteay is a Khmer term meaning "citadel" or "fortress," which is also applied to walled temples.
For example, Banteay Kdei Temple means Citadel of the Cells, Kdei refers to the monks' cells in the temple, and Banteay Srei Temple means “citadel of the women” or “citadel of beauty”.
