Photographs from Chau Say Tevoda – Spirit of Angkor series by Lucas Varro
Chau Say Tevoda stands like a whispered memory beside the sacred axis of Angkor—tucked between forest and sky, poised in delicate symmetry. Though smaller in scale than her monumental neighbors, this temple holds a particular tenderness: finely carved devatas, broken lintels laid bare to the heavens, and doorways that seem to open into silence itself.
Built in devotion to both Shiva and Vishnu, Chau Say Tevoda is a sanctuary of dual presence—masculine and feminine, shadow and illumination. Time has weathered her softly, yet something sacred endures: a grace that lingers in the fallen stones, a warmth that flickers in the sandstone’s grain.
In this quiet collection from the Spirit of Angkor series, Lucas Varro turns his black-and-white film cameras toward the subtle beauty of Chau Say Tevoda. Each photograph—shaped with long exposure, chiaroscuro, and hand-toning—captures not only form, but feeling. Light resting on the shoulder of a weathered devata. Stillness gathering in the empty threshold of a ruined sanctuary.
These limited edition prints are offered on museum-grade Hahnemühle Bamboo paper and are accompanied by a Collector’s Print Package that includes poetic writings, curatorial reflections, and field notes drawn from the artist’s solitary visits.
This is a temple not of grandeur, but of intimacy. An echo of the divine, quiet enough to hear.
