Apsaras in Light and Stone
From the Spirit of Angkor series by Lucas Varro
They are not frozen in stone,
but listening—
for the silence in us that still remembers.
Angkor’s apsaras—celestial dancers, devatās, and guardians of sacred joy—grace the walls of these sanctuaries with a presence that is both eternal and intimately near. Carved more than eight centuries ago, yet alive in the hush of temple light, they appear not as relics, but as witnesses—bare-shouldered, adorned with flame-like crowns and jeweled girdles, each one utterly distinct, as if dreamt into being by a different soul.
In these portraits, shaped from black-and-white film and hand-toned in subtle gold, Lucas Varro captures the moment when shadow gives way to radiance. Light does not merely fall upon them—it seems summoned. Chiaroscuro deepens their gaze; soft gold breathes warmth back into stone. These are not photographs of carvings. They are devotional icons.
Each image opens a quiet threshold: a space where the divine feminine still breathes through silence, stillness, and timeworn grace.
This collection invites you to linger in their presence. Not to look at stone, but to behold spirit.
They do not call loudly.
But if you pause… they will speak.
