Photographs from Kravan Temple – Spirit of Angkor series by Lucas Varro
Tucked quietly among trees just east of Angkor Wat, Kravan Temple is a sanctuary of surprising intimacy—its five red-brick towers glowing with a quiet warmth, its sanctuaries lit from within by carvings of Lakshmi, Vishnu, and the sacred feminine in luminous repose. Unlike the grand processional temples of Angkor, Kravan speaks in hushed tones, offering the pilgrim not awe, but nearness.
Built in the 10th century and rare in its material and interior iconography, Kravan holds a distinct spiritual timbre. Its slender towers and deeply recessed sanctums create an atmosphere where light and shadow become scripture—where flame-like brick and time-worn stone cradle the presence of the divine in gentle stillness.
In this meditative collection, Lucas Varro turns his analogue cameras toward Kravan’s quiet interiority. Each photograph was shaped through long exposure, chiaroscuro, and hand-toning on black-and-white film—revealing not only the temple’s architecture, but its spirit. A luminous carving of Lakshmi caught in crumbling light. A sacred gaze half-shrouded by shadow and time.
Printed in limited edition on museum-grade Hahnemühle Bamboo paper, each work is accompanied by a Collector’s Print Package including poetic writings, curatorial reflections, and notes from the artist’s solitary field visits.
This is Kravan not as monument, but as ember. A place where devotion still flickers, low and luminous, in the hollows of the stone.
