Photographs from the Spirit of Angkor series by Lucas Varro
At the ancient temples of Angkor, there are carvings that do not merely decorate—they emerge. Figures that seem to breathe just beyond the veil of stone. Deities, guardians, dancers, and sacred beasts carved in high relief press outward from the sandstone as if rising from a dream of form and silence. These are not depictions. They are presences.
Unlike the long narrative bands of bas-relief, the high-relief carvings of Angkor are singular, intimate, and incarnate. Their shadows fall deeper. Their gestures are sculptural meditations. Light traces the curve of a cheek, the press of a palm, the unfurling lotus at the edge of a robe—and in that gesture, the divine steps forward.
In this focused collection from the Spirit of Angkor series, Lucas Varro turns his large and medium format film cameras toward these threshold figures. Captured in the solitude of first light or misted rain, each image is shaped through long exposure, chiaroscuro, and hand-toning to honour the sculptural spirit of these carvings. What results are not portraits of stone, but reverent meetings in light and shadow.
Printed in limited editions on museum-grade Hahnemühle Bamboo paper, each work is accompanied by a Collector’s Print Package including poetic writings, curatorial notes, and reflections from the artist’s silent communion with the temples.
This is a collection of presences that step forward—half in light, half in memory—emerging from stone to meet the one who pauses long enough to see.
